Unfortunately, McDonald’s and Burger King had both grown significantly, with each vying to capture the majority of the New York market. Over the next decade, Wetson’s expanded over much of the Northeast, opening over 70 locations across New Jersey, Connecticut, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and yes, Long Island. Wetson’s menu was practically identical to McDonald’s, with hamburgers, french fries, drinks and shakes. Each stand featured rows of bright orange circles on the roof, and offered a walk-up window and outdoor seating only. With White Castle serving as their only real competition, the pair opened their first Wetson’s location.

Two men from Valley Stream, Harold Norbitz and Carl Wetanson (a popular race car driver on the Island) visited a McDonald’s in Chicago, were impressed by the concept, and decided to duplicate it in New York, hopefully before the Golden Arches made their inevitable entrance into the local market. In 1959, the fast food giant of the West Coast, McDonald’s, had yet to open any restaurants in the New York area. Still, amongst those who had the pleasure, it remains one of the most fondly remembered burger joints from the era. Until this is resolved, I do not think I can recommend Burger Shop, which is a shame, because their burgers deserve a second look.Find a bunch of New Yorkers waxing nostalgic over hamburgers from the good old days and you’re likely to hear Wetson’s enter the conversation. They should simplify/​trim down their menu, and get rid of delivery entirely, having that extra staff member dedicated to either taking orders or cooking. No delivery, even though they advertise it. Orders take a minimum of 25 – 30 minutes to process, assuming they don’t get confused. CONS: Anything beyond burgers and shakes are average to slightly above average, which doesn’t justify their cost. To sum up - PROS: Quality of burgers and buns are excellent, and the prices are marginally cheaper than Five Guys, at least if you’re dining on Staten Island. All other food was good, although I am not sure why their dipping cup for the sauce was nearly half the size of the shake cup.

Food was still good for the first pick up, but the second pickup, the shake was COMPLETELY watery. All food was served in Styrofoam, and I could swear that the cup they used it at least 4− 6oz smaller than their inhouse serving for shakes. I tried for delivery on both occasions, but the delivery man was never there.

The fries served were too greasy, even by Five Guys standards. The burger and shake were great, but the wait and the over all service was unacceptable. This suggests maybe one chef in the back, and two waiters in the front. I had to wait 15 minutes before someone came to take my order, which I did not get until 30 minutes later. My first visit was a dine-​in, and I had to seat myself. However, there are too many minor issues that add up over time. I’ve visited this place three times on the taste of its burgers alone.
