They were also used to hunt foxes, rabbits, otters, and other small prey. Their long body and short and powerful legs were perfect for the job of digging up badger holes so they could get inside and grab their prey. They were developed by German hunters between the 1700s and 1800s by mixing French Basset Hounds, Spaniels, Terriers, Pinschers, and Braques. The Dachshund is a German breed that was named for what it is, a badger dog.
